Who Are We?

SJA is a larger than average four form entry junior school setting for pupils aged 7 to 11, with a pupil capacity of 480. SJA became an academy in July 2011 and is a Single Academy Trust. The academy is situated in Southwater and provides an education for children living in both the village and the wider local area. Like the village itself, we pride ourselves on a friendly, family-orientated feel and value our strong community ties. Our values of kindness, resilience and working hard can be seen at every level from the incredible pupils, the passionate staff and the committed board of trustees.

The Role

As a trustee, you'll work alongside fellow board members to provide strategic leadership and oversight of our trust. This is a voluntary role that offers the opportunity to:

  • Provide strategic direction – Help set the vision and long-term goals for our school
  • Ensure accountability – Monitor performance and hold senior leaders to account
  • Safeguard our pupils – Ensure robust safeguarding arrangements are in place
  • Oversee finances – Ensure resources are used effectively to benefit our pupils
  • Champion our values – Ensure our school remains true to its ethos and mission

What skills do I need?

We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. You don't need to be an education expert – we're particularly interested in individuals who can bring:

  • Strategic thinking and decision-making skills
  • A commitment to improving outcomes for children
  • The ability to challenge constructively and ask searching questions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team • Integrity, objectivity, and a willingness to learn
