Who Are We?

The Shelley Memorial Project ( SMP ) is a Horsham-based group, run by volunteers who are enthusiastic about the arts and our cultural heritage. The SMP has been established to celebrate and promote the life and work of the great Romantic and radical poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Horsham's most famous citizen and one of West Sussex's most famous literary figures. The Project also highlights Shelley's connection with Horsham, the town most associated with his birthplace. We run poetry related events, have active social media and a website that promotes Shelley, our activities, local cultural events.

The Role

We are currently looking to increase the size of our organising committee. Since becoming a Community Interest Company a few years ago, the level of business admin has increased as we have to keep up with a number of regulatory submissions to Companies House and HMRC. We also need to ensure our own meetings and those with other organisations, such as the council, are properly recorded to keep us on track.

As we are a small volunteer-led group, there is not a huge amount of admin but enough for us to realise that we could do with some additional support with this on our committee.

Our committee work is flexible as we currently have a small team of 11. Some committee members hold specific roles and lead on these, but generally speaking we all work together to deliver our objectives. Delivering a successful project is very much a joint effort with everyone contributing to make it all work. This means that even if you have a specific role, there is always an opportunity to get involved in a range of activities.

What skills do I need?

  • Organisational and administrative skills
  • Able to keep records and files in order and manage diary dates
  • Agenda drafting and minute-taking
  • Able to record meeting outcomes clearly and efficiently and follow up with appropriate committee members on matters arising from meetings.
  • Able to complete short annual reports for submission to Companies House.

We hold a formal committee meeting via ZOOM once a month to review our objectives and plan progress, these are on a Thursday. We also run talks and events throughout the year. These could be daytime or evening events. Not all committee members take part in all of these, but generally everyone will work between meetings to ensure our work is successful. We meet with the council on a quarterly basis; committee members attend these meetings as appropriate e.g the Administrator/ secretary would be asked to attend if possible.
