Who Are We?

We protect and care for places so people and nature can thrive. Many millions share the belief that nature, beauty and history are for everyone. So we look after the nation's coastline, historic sites, countryside and green spaces, ensuring everyone benefits.

The Role:

If only these walls could talk! That’s why our Volunteer Room Guides make such a difference, connecting our visitors to the fascinating stories of our collection and family history.

What's involved?

  • Providing a warm, friendly welcome to all visitors
  • Learning about Petworth House and Park, so that you can share all that’s special.
  • Helping visitors to discover more by telling stories and anecdotes relevant to the property, collection, history and spirit of place.
  • Helping to protect interiors and collections from damage during open hours
  • Following security procedures to prevent theft or damage
  • Being responsible for the evacuation of visitors in an emergency and playing a critical role on rotation as Fire Zone Warden

By getting involved you could:

  • Get to know Petworth by heart and learn its secrets
  • Use your people skills to welcome and inspire visitors from all over the world
  • Be part of a varied and enthusiastic team and make new friends
  • Spend time in fabulous rooms jam-packed with history and one of the finest art collections in the care of the National Trust

What skills do I need?

This role will suit you if you are...

  • Enthusiastic and friendly, enjoy meeting people, like operating as part of a team and are keen to learn. Petworth has a wide audience and there is something here for everyone!
  • Interested in Petworth, art or history (or all three!) – you don’t need to know the history of the universe, but as a Room Guide, you’ll share lots of stories to engage our visitors Available at least once a fortnight.
