Who Are We?

Sussex Central Girlguiding has approximately 4000 members. We provide fun, challenges, and leadership for girls and young women through our Rainbow (age 4 - 7), Brownies (age 7 - 10), Guides (age 10 - 14), and Ranger (age 14 - 18) sections. Volunteers run weekly meetings and also give freely of their time to maintain the smooth running of the programme.

With guiding girls have fun, adventure and the space to discover their potential. They go to their first ever sleepover, canoe on rivers, learn about body confidence, and lead their own camp. Or sometimes they simply have fun and try new things with friends.

The Role:

We are looking for a Volunteer Youth Unit Leader to support an existing Girlguiding group in the Horsham area.

By volunteering with us, you can help girls build their confidence, have adventures, learn new skills and have loads of fun - no matter your experience, your background, or how much time you have spare.

Volunteering during unit meetings means getting messy, meeting new people and running activities that help girls discover their potential and build their confidence. Volunteering with us isn't just about campfires and helping girls to get their next badge - although those are special moments that we all share. It's about empowering girls and giving them new experiences. It's being a role model and sharing and developing your skills.

As Unit Leader, you'll be responsible for running the unit, leading a team of volunteers, and planning and delivering a high-quality programme of awesome activities and events (either in person or by a virtual means). This is a key role that works directly towards the aims of Girlguiding. If you've got what it takes to be a unit leader, we want you!

What skills do I need?

As a Unit Leader you may delegate duties to other Leaders and volunteers, working together to make the most of the skills and time you are able to give.

The role will involve

  • Providing a safe girl-only space where girls and young women can discover their full potential.
  • Providing ongoing leadership and support to the Unit Leadership Team and other volunteer members of the unit.
  • With the Unit Team, create and deliver an accessible and inclusive programme based on the Girlguiding programme for your section.
  • Encourage and support the members of the unit in making decisions within the unit and the wider Girlguiding community.
  • Keep up to date with new resources and programme initiatives, and use them as appropriate.
  • Complete relevant training for the role and encourage other members of the team to develop their skills.
  • Ensure unit administration and financial tasks are completed.
  • Ensure all unit volunteers comply with current Girlguiding policies and regulations.
  • Ensure all activity instructors/visitors to the unit meet the requirements laid out in The Guiding Manual.
  • Maintain clear communication with parents and carers and gain all necessary permissions for activities.
  • Provide an initial response to any concerns or complaints from girls and young women or their parents/carers, following Girlguiding’s Safeguarding Policy.
