Who Are We?

We protect and care for places so people and nature can thrive. Many millions share the belief that nature, beauty and history are for everyone. So we look after the nation's coastline, historic sites, countryside and green spaces, ensuring everyone benefits.

The Role:

An exciting and fantastic opportunity has arisen within our Garden Team for a Volunteer Groundsperson/Gardener to assist in the care, maintenance, enhancement and development of a beautiful and diverse garden here at Petworth House.

Please note: At this stage we are looking for an expression of interest in this role and would aim to commence volunteering in late March or early April 2026.

We ask that you volunteer for 1 full day per week and live within 20 miles of Petworth.

What skills do I need?

  • Focusing on the more slightly physical side of gardening to assist us in delivering horticultural excellence and great visitor experiences.
  • Assisting the Gardeners across the garden and sometimes the 700 acre parkland.
  • Duties will include maintenance of the grounds and gardens to the highest possible standards, therefore experience in the use of basic garden machinery is necessary.
  • Training will be provided on relevant machinery equipment.
  • Look after garden machinery and equipment to ensure equipment is properly maintained.
  • There may be other activities where we could use your assistance, especially with projects out in the park.
  • As your skills develop, being a friendly face for visitors to the garden and answering any questions they may entail from plant questions to general supported by the garden team.
  • You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know National Trust health and safety and evacuation procedures.
  • You may also be asked to assist with events or education about the gardens.
  • Engaging with the public via property events and education.
  • Having a jolly good time outdoors!
